The sinless Son of God took upon Himself the burden of sin and was crucified on Calvary, outside the gates of Jerusalem, for all humanity. The sin of humankind required a blood sacrifice and only the sinless life of Jesus was sufficient to give man salvation and eternal life. The transgression of God's law made it necessary for Christ to die a sacrifice, and thus make a way possible for man to escape the penalty, and yet the honor of God's law be preserved.
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12: 2
In yielding up His precious life, Christ’s heart was rent with anguish and oppressed with gloom. But it was not the fear or the pain of death that caused His suffering. It was the crushing weight of the sin of the world, a sense of separation from His Father's love. This was what broke the Saviour's heart, and brought His death so soon.
